Vaccine Information

Learn more about each vaccine below:

Bexsero protects against a bacterial called Nisseria Meningitidis, serotype B which causes “Bacterial Meningitis.” Meningitis is an infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord, which can be deadly. It can spread quickly in communal living spaces, like a dorm.  We recommend Bexsero for all teens but especially those bound for college or the military.

Beyfortus (Nirsevimab) is a preventative antibody that can prevent lung disease caused by the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).  RSV is a leading cause of hospitalization in infants less than 6 months.  Beyfortus is approved and recommended for all children less than 8 months.

(More info: CDC.gov – RSV preventative antibody)

DTaP protects against Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis.  Diphtheria is a bacteria that can cause difficulty breathing, paralysis, and death.  Tetanus causes muscle stiffness that can cause difficulty breathing, swallowing and even death.  Pertussis, also called Whooping cough, can cause a lower respiratory infection that causes serious illness or death, especially in young babies.

(More info: CDC Vaccine VIS – DTaP)

Gardasil protects against several strains of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). HPV causes cervical and vaginal cancers in women, penile cancers in men, genital warts, and several types of head and neck cancers.  Studies have show a nearly 80% reduction in cervical cancers with the HPV vaccine.

(More info: CDC Vaccine VIS – HPV)

Hepatitis A is a virus that can cause serious liver disease or liver failure.

(More info: CDC Vaccine VIS – Hepatitis A)

Hepatitis B is a virus that can cause serious liver disease that may be lifelong. Hepatitis B can be spread in several ways including from mother to baby during birth. Hepatitis B is recommended immediately after birth to prevent this kind of transmission, even if the risk is low.

(More info: CDC Vaccine VIS – Hepatitis B)

Haemophilus Influenzae, Type B (Hib) is a bacteria that can cause meningitis (an infection of the lining around the brain), Tracheitis (a severe throat infection that can close the airway), bloodstream infections, and more. Prior to the vaccine it was a leading cause of meningitis and death in children.

(More info: CDC Vaccine VIS – Hib)

Kinrix is a combination shot that contains the DTaP and Polio vaccines.

Menveo protects against a bacteria called Nisseria Meningitidis, serotype A, C, W, and Y each of which cause bacterial meningitis. Meningitis is an infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord, which can be deadly.

(More info: CDC Vaccine VIS – Meningitis ACWY)

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that causes fever, cough, congestion, rash and can lead to severe complications if untreated.  Mumps is a viral infection that causes pain and swelling in the salivary glands, testicles, and in some cases brain swelling or irreversible hearing loss.  Rubella is a viral infection that can cause a host of symptoms but can be very dangerous to pregnant women and fetuses.  This is a live virus vaccine and side effects are more common than with other vaccines.

(More info: CDC Vaccine VIS – MMR)

Prevnar protects against infection by Pneumococcal bacteria.  Infections with this bacteria can range from ear and sinus infections to pneumonia and meningitis (an infection of the lining around the brain).

(More info: CDC Vaccine VIS – Pneumococcal vaccine)

Pediarix is a combination vaccine that contains DTaP, Hib, Polio, and Hepatitis B.

(More info: CDC Vaccine VIS)

Proquad is a combination vaccine containing MMR and Varicella.

(More info: CDC Vaccine VIS – MMRV)

Polio is a disabling and life-threatening disease that can lead to paralysis and death. It has been nearly eradicated in the United States thanks to this vaccine.

(More info: CDC Vaccine VIS – Polio)

TDaP is a booster version of the DTaP vaccine given to older children and adults.

(More info: CDC Vaccine VIS – Tdap)

(More info: CDC Vaccine VIS -Varicella)

Influenza is a highly contagious virus that causes respiratory symptoms.  Children under 5 years old and those with underlying health conditions are at higher risk for hospitalization from the flu.  A new flu vaccine is produced each year to match circulating strains.
