Breastfeeding has tremendous benefits for infants and parents, alike. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of your baby’s life and continued breastfeeding with complimentary foods for at least 2 years and beyond as mutually desired. Breastfeeding, however, can be a challenge for some families. At Potomac Pediatrics, we are lucky to have an outstanding Lactation Consultant who can help you along this infant feeding journey..

Meet Maureen!

Maureen is a Registered Nurse (RN) and an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). She has been working in pediatrics for over 25+ years but at Potomac Pediatrics for 18 years. She is passionate about all thing’s moms and babies. Maureen’s approach to helping a family feed their newborn is to use her skills to the meet family’s goals however they want to feed their baby. Maureen loves to follow families on their parenthood journey and help them well past the first few days of their child’s life. Maureen is a Gaithersburg native and has 3 kids.

Prenatal lactation consultations (In-person or virtual), discuss topics like:

Preparing for breast/bottle feeding
Discuss any barriers or worries about breastfeeding
Navigating maternity leave and back-to-work planning
Supplies for breast or bottle feeding

Office Consultations with your newborn or infant (In-person or virtual), discuss topics like:

Poor infant weight gain
Latch difficulty
Nipple preference
Nipple soreness
Low milk supply
Pumping
Engorgement
Plugged ducts

Mastitis
Feeding development in premature infants
Feeding multiples
Returning to work
Weaning and food transition
Bottle feeding

Newborn Support Group

Meet other mix and mingle with other moms with newborns and infants

Discuss topics including:

Discuss your infant feeding challenges with expert support and the challenges of caring for a newborn.

Please note that these are group lactation counseling sessions and your insurance will be billed. Co-pays and deductibles may apply

Consultation Fees:

Our lactation consultant is credentialed with our insurance carriers. All in-office visits, telehealth visits, and group sessions will be billed to the mother’s insurance plan. Co-pays and deductibles may apply. Televisits typically are no longer covered for lactation services, if your insurance doesn’t cover your televisit you will be 100% responsible for the cost of this visit and it will be charged to your credit card on file.

Preparing for your private consultation:

Feed your baby beforehand:

Try to feed your baby an hour and a half before your appointment time. We would like for your baby to be interested in feeding during the consultation but not so hungry that they are hard to calm. If this is not possible, do not worry!

Feed yourself:

Make sure you eat a good meal or snack before your meeting with the lactation consultant. This will help you feel your best and allow you to retain more information.

Bring back-up support:

It is often helpful to have a support person present so you can learn together. This person can help you remember information discussed during your appointment.

Bring your infant feeding accessories:

If you are routinely using any tools or want to learn about an accessory that you have bring those along as well. That can include nursing pillows, pumps, the haakaa, and nipple shields. We have additional supplies in our office if needed.
